2ND LIEUTENANT US ARMY AIR CORPS- WWII - LEAD NAVIGATOR FOR B-24 SQUADRON, BASED IN HARTWICK, ENGLAND. "FLYING WHALES" OF 330TH SQUADRON OF THE 93RD BOMB GROUP.GOT SHOT DOWN 3/23/1945 OVER MUNSTER, GERMANY

I was the bombardier on the Jimmy Powell crew on which your father was the pilotage navigator which was shot down over Munster March 23, 1945. We were hit shortly after I released the bombs, at which time my head hit the navigator's table and I "blacked out" momentarily. On coming to, apparently navigator Edward Krall passed my chute (which had blown open and silk was coming out). I managed to get the left buckle fastened before passing out again--our plane was in a spin and I could not buckle the right side. I regained consciousness lying on my back on the ground with 7-8 German Home Guard soldiers pointing their rifles at me. They took Jose Diez, co-pilot Fred Howering and myself to a barn, and guarded the open area on each side to keep the local German populace from coming in to get at the "flegers". Later that afternoon we were taken to the Munster City hall, and interrrogated that evening by a 6'4" Major, who said he had at one time lived in Brooklyn. The next day we were taken by horse and wagon to Stalag VI F, where we resided with prisoners from all countries for 4-7(?) days.__During that stay, your father, who had apparently recently arrived overseas from the US, entertained us by singing "Rum and Cola" which none of us had ever heard.__Then we three and about 9-10 other prisoners were put on a boxcar (with about 12-15 German soliders guarding us, occupying the other end of the boxcar). We eventually arrived at Bielefeld, Stalag 11B. Due to my injuries I was placed in a hospital ward, and your father and Fred were sent to another area.__Wallace J. Spencer

Stalag 11B - This POW camp w as located in Fallingbostel, Germany. It was a huge complex and probably formed the largest POW camp in Germany. The "Great Day" came at 9 o'clock on the morning of April 16, 1945.

Following a battle that day, approximately 10,000 Prisoners of War were liberated at Stalag 11B by the British. The 7th Armored Division was led by Field Marshall Montgomery's "Desert Rat" Tank Corp.
